There is a mental health crisis that is impacting on people of all ages.

 

 

🧠 ADULTS

 

Work-related stress, depression, or anxiety continues to have a major impact on productivity and wellbeing:

 

In 2022/23, 17.1 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression, or anxiety.

 

The average time off per affected person was 19.6 days.

 

These issues accounted for 49% of all work-related ill health and 54% of all working days lost to ill health.

 

According to Champion Health’s 2024 Workplace Health Report:

 

65% of employees experience at least mild symptoms of anxiety

Depression symptoms have risen 11% since the previous year

79% report moderate-to-high stress levels

61% of women report unhelpful stress at work

 

Among 16–24 year olds:

 

50% increase in negative stress reports since 2023

74% experience at least mild anxiety

40% report clinically-relevant anxiety symptoms

35% of employees feel negatively impacted by stress, even if coping

71% rate their sleep as “average” or worse; 1 in 3 rate it as “poor”

 

 CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

Mental health challenges among children and young people are at crisis levels:

1 in 6 children aged 5–16 are likely to have a diagnosable mental health problem

 

The likelihood of children experiencing a mental health issue has increased by 50% in the last 3 years

 

In a typical classroom of 30, 5 students are likely to be affected

50% of all mental health issues emerge by the age of 14

 

39.2% of 6–16-year-olds have experienced a deterioration in mental health since 2017

 

In Nottinghamshire the County Council highlights that:

75% of all mental ill health starts before the age of 18” and emphasises the importance of early prevention, resilience and intervention to tackle the problem head-on.
